BIRKIRKARA
Birkirkara is one of the largest and oldest towns located in the centre of Malta. At the heart of Birkirkara lies its historic core, where narrow winding streets lead to quaint squares adorned with charming churches and traditional townhouses.
Birkirkara was listed as one of the original 12 medieval parishes in 1436. It continued to flourish until it splintered into separate parishes. One of the town’s most notable landmarks is the majestic St. Helen’s Basilica, a baroque masterpiece dating back to the 17th century, adorned with intricate frescoes and ornate marble altars. A tiny garden separates the town’s older area from the new quarters, and where one can see one of the old railway stations on the commuter line that ran from Rabat to Valletta. Apart from the churches, the oldest buildings in the town are the windmills. One is a private residence, the other, at the heart of the town, is an art gallery.
Despite its urban character, Birkirkara has become an important commercial centre yet maintains a strong sense of community spirit, with residents gathering in the town’s cafes and piazzas to socialise and unwind. With its rich history, vibrant culture, and welcoming atmosphere, offering a truly authentic Maltese experience.
