BOOK A VIEWING
Mosta lies in the centre of the island. It is best known for its monumental church dedicated to the Assumption of St Mary. The Mosta church is better known as the Rotunda as it is reputed to have the third largest dome in the world. The church was built by voluntary labour between 1833 and 1863 and consecrated in 1871. It was designed by Giorgio Grognet de Vasse, a military engineer. A miracle happened when in 1942 during World Two a thousand pound bomb penetrated the dome and kept rolling through the interior without exploding.
The town has several legends and a number of historic places such as the Victoria Lines, Fort Mosta and medieval chapels.
One of the chapels is the Speranza Chapel situated at the Speranza Valley and which was built between 1760 and 1761. A legend tied to the Chapel recounts the story of a young girl and her sisters while taking care of their family’s sheep were at risk to be taken by the invaders. While the sisters escaped, the young girl hid in a cave under the chapel and meanwhile she prayed to the Virgin Mary, promising that if she were saved, she would build a chapel dedicated to Our Lady.
Another chapel is one dedicated to St Paul the Hermit which was built in the 17th century and situated at Wied il-Ghasel (Valley of Honey). It is one the most picturesque wayside chapels in Malta.
Fort Mosta was the most strategically placed land fort along the Victoria Lines. It was built on the cliff face of Wied il-Ghasel between 1878 and 1880.
With regards to real estate in Mosta, it could be described as charming and authentic at the core while visibly modern. Many beautiful character homes are found here and blend in well with the more contemporary terraced houses and villas as well as modern apartment blocks. It is a town that is a much sought after location as besides being central it can satisfy an array of budgets and tastes when it comes to property.
